Botany classes

Conifer Identification
Sunday, February 19, 2023, 9:30am-3:00pm
The Pacific Northwest is home to the richest variety of conifer species in the country. Learn how to tell pines from larches, grand firs from Douglas-firs, and more.  We will talk about how to sort all these species by family to help make them easier to remember, and how the species themselves sort themselves along an elevation gradient so you will know where to look for them.

When: Sunday, February 19, 2023, 9:30am-3:00pm
Where: Mt Hood National Forest
Cost: $70; Current Cascadia Wild volunteers receive $10 off, use promo code CaWVolunteer10off.

Plant Identification at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge
Sunday, April 16, 2023, 1:00-3:30pm
Sunday, May 14, 1:00-3:30pm
Saturday, June 24, 1:00-3:30pm

Learn to identify wild plants. In this series of 3 classes, we will explore Oaks Bottom to learn what plants are growing in this natural area. You will learn not only what traits to look for to identify each plant, but also dive deeper into botany terminology, edibility, plant growth habits and habitats, as well as the role of various plants in the restoration work that has been done in the park.

As spring progresses, different plants and flowers will be visible, so each class will be a unique experience. Each class will also visit a different area within Oaks Bottom Wildlife Area.

This class is a partnership between Cascadia Wild and Portland Parks and Recreation.
Instructors: Teri Lysak, Cascadia Wild, and Laura Guderyahn, Portland Parks and Recreation

Where: Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge
