Plant Identification and Use
Saturday, April 28. Time: noon to 4pm. Cost: $20

Identifying plants is easy once you know what to look for. This class will teach you to recognize the patterns that will help you easily identify the common plants of this area, both in flower and when not flowering. We will cover botany terminology, common plant families, and parts of a flower. Common uses of various plants will also be covered, because really knowing plants is a participatory skill, not just an intellectual one.
Location: 3-Creeks Natural Area (also called North Clackamas District Park or Harmony Road Neighborhood Park). We will meet at the adjacent North Clackamas Aquatic Park, located at 7300 SE Harmony Road.

Plant Identification and Use
Saturday, May 26. Time: 11am to 4pm. Cost: $20

In this class we will review the topics covered in the previous class, and learn to identify plants in a different ecosystem east of the Cascades. Previous plant experience is not a prerequisite.
Location: Hood River Mountain. Carpooling to the site is encouraged.

Forest Tree Ecology
Saturday, May 19. Time: 9am-5pm. Cost: $50.

Come take a walk through the woods and learn to read the stories in the trees. Learn to identify the native trees (even from a moving car!), where different species are found and why they are there, how to deduce the history of the stand, and how to recognize common tree diseases. Topics include tree ecology, shade tolerance and its importance, forest succession and disturbance history, habitat types, health and history of individual trees, and forest insects and diseases.
Location: Lost Creek Campground area on the Mt Hood National Forest. Carpooling to site is encouraged.

Instructor: Plant classes are taught by Teri Lysak. She has taught various naturalist skills for the last 5 years, and previous to that worked as a field forester. She holds a MS in Forest Ecology.

Mushrooms and Permaculture
Tuesday, January 24. Time: 6-8pm. Cost: $10

Join us for an informative introduction to the world of mushrooms. We will learn about the role mushrooms play in nature, how we can incorporate them into our outdoor grow spaces, and basic mushroom taxonomy and terminology. You will receive a handout with resources, low-tech cultivation methods, and other mushroom- centric information.
